- Program Leader: Rabbi Jeffrey Lazar
Perhaps one of the better-known scriptural readings during the High Holy Days is the Yom Kippur afternoon text from the Book of Jonah. As we prepare for the High Holy Days, we’ll explore the text and the many questions it raises together: Who was Jonah, and what is so special about his message that it warranted this kind of prominence? Should we understand the book as allegory or as legitimate prophetic text? Why is it read on the Day of Atonement? What did the prophet stand for, and how do we relate to it today?
Using biblical text and modern-day examples, we will examine the Book of Jonah to relive and animate the prophet’s words, and to arrive at an understanding of his message.
This course follows a sequential structure, and participants are encouraged to attend all sessions. However, drop-ins are welcome at any point during the course. If you have any questions regarding participation, please contact the program leader.
