My mother has enjoyed High Holiday services at TBE for many years. As the years passed, aging changed the way she accessed these satisfying and spiritual traditions. First it was hearing aides, next came her walker, then disorientation, and now a wheelchair. But the High Holidays remain an important time for her, and she looks forward to family gatherings, delicious food, and participation in TBE services. For several years, we reduced the amount of services she attended in person, enjoying links to the rest from the comfort of my home. This year, Mom was unable to leave her memory facility but was still anxious to remember and experience as much as possible.

What ensued was nothing short of wonderful! Receiving expert technology aid from Laura at TBE Support, and logistics and beautiful decorations from the Activities Director at Mom’s memory facility, we brought TBE services to her and other residents and staff, representing many religions and backgrounds. We had a huge screen with plenty of volume, viewable by all, with some people standing, some in stationary chairs, some in wheelchairs. 

I watched tearfully as Mom mouthed the words to the Shema and the Kaddish, rocked to the gentle rhythms of beautiful music, and took delight in the sounds of the shofar. I served as narrator, explaining to anyone not familiar with what they were watching what I knew of the history, meaning, and reasons for what they were seeing on the screen. 

We ended with generous servings of challah, apples and honey, and apple juice, including the blessings. And as they all enjoyed this special snack, they learned, first hand, one of the ways we wish everyone a sweet new year!
