Rescuing Hope: Resistance and Resilience, a Conversation with Bernice Lerner
Join us for a conversation with Bernice Lerner about her book All the Horrors of War: A Jewish Girl, a British Doctor, and the Liberation of Bergen-Belsen. In this presentation, Dr. Bernice Lerner will discuss two extraordinary cases of “rescuing hope”: The formation of a vibrant displaced persons community in Bergen-Belsen after the devastation and ruin experienced by the “surviving remnant,” and the coming-back-to-life story of her mother, Rachel Genuth, a child survivor of the notorious death camp. Through the aggregate, we learn about the remarkable resilience of the Jewish people; through the particular, we discern specific ways in which a young girl displayed resistance and resilience, never giving up hope.

About the Author
Bernice Lerner is the author of All the Horrors of War: A Jewish Girl, a British Doctor, and the Liberation of Bergen-Belsen, and other writings on the Holocaust and on virtue ethics. As director of Boston University’s Center for Character and Social Responsibility, Bernice lectured widely and taught courses on character education and on the Holocaust. As dean of adult learning at Hebrew College, she created innovative programs, including the acclaimed Me’ah, a two-year journey through Jewish history. Bernice earned a bachelor’s from Stony Brook University, a master’s from the Jewish Theological Seminary, and a doctorate from Boston University.

Dr. Lerner is a senior scholar at Boston University’s Center for Character and Social Responsibility and an affiliate of the Ikeda Center for Peace, Learning, and Dialogue.
