CASA Goes to the Prison Book Program (In Person)

  • Saturday, January 28, 2023
  • 12:15 PM to 4:30 PM

Join CASA  as we return to one of our favorite CASA efforts! The Prison Book Program sends books to prisoners to support their educational, vocational, and personal development and to help them avoid returning to prison after release. The program is housed in a historic church in Quincy, where we will read prisoner letters with book requests, search the inventory room for books to match the requests, and process, invoice, and wrap book packages. Education has been shown to reduce recidivism and the books we share can also offer connection, open doors, and change a life. Join CASA as we practice compassion and take positive steps on behalf of this invisible and often forgotten population.

The time for the event reflected includes travel time to and from Quincy from the Wellesley area.

To attend this event, please RSVP to Ilene Pincus ilene@pincus.org

Community of Adult Social Action (CASA) volunteers work together on small-group social justice activities to make connections, build community, and express our Jewish values. For more than fifteen years, CASA has been building community and connection within TBE by bringing together congregants to engage in meaningful Tikkun Olam in the Greater Boston community.  We organize small groups of 5-10 adult TBE congregants to volunteer at sites like Community Servings, the Prison Book Program, Waltham Community Farm, Rosie’s Place, Pine Street Inn, and the Greater Boston Food Bank.  Joining a CASA event requires no long-term commitment and no advanced training. These are true “one off” events, meaning that when you sign up for a CASA event you are committing only to that one event. There are no meetings or future obligations. However, we find that many of our CASA volunteers enjoy the events so much they choose to come back and join us again and again. So join a CASA event, and build your connections within TBE while helping to repair the world.  For more information, please contact Janet Goldenberg at janetzipin@rcn.com.
