Join us for an important health awareness program: Lung Cancer Screening and Surgical Advancements for Lung Cancer Panel Discussion with members of the Lung Nodule Clinic at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
Did you know it is predicted there will be approximately 238,000 new cases of lung cancer in the US this year and 127,000 deaths? Lung cancer remains the #1 killer of men and women across all races and ethnic groups.
- Are you between 50 and 80 years old? Or do you know someone who is?
- Do you or someone you know have a 20 “pack year” or greater history? A “pack year“ equals the number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day multiplied by the number of years smoked. One
pack equals 20 cigarettes. - Do you or does someone you know currently smoke OR have you or someone you know quit in the past 15 years?
Our Speakers:
- Lana Yvonne Schumacher-Beal, MD, Hospital Network and Program Director for Robotic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, will speak about the Surgical advances in the treatment of Lung Cancer, including robotic surgery
- Shawn Lear, PA-C, MHS, will speak about the process of lung cancer screening, treatment advances, the steps taken if your testing comes back positive and the Lung
Nodule Clinic at Newton Wellesley Hospital - Hear from a TBE congregant who recently underwent lifesaving screening and surgical intervention with this NWH team
Speaker bios:
Lana Yvonne Schumacher-Beal, MD, Hospital Network and Program Director for Robotic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Schumacher received her medical degree from the UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles, CA. She completed her surgical internship and residency at Stanford University Hospital in Stanford, CA. and her cardiothoracic fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA. She also did further training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, NY.
Shawn Lear, PA-C, MHS, Shawn is the Thoracic Surgery Physician Assistant and lead provider of the Lung Nodule Clinic at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Her areas of interest include early detection of lung cancer, smoking cessation, and diagnosis of lung cancer. She received her PA education and masters at Duke University and completed a surgical residency program at Yale/Norwalk Hospital. Shawn is a resource to primary care physicians and other providers who have patients with incidentally discovered lung nodules or positive lung cancer screening studies.
