There is nothing more American in music than folk music. In the 1950s Senator Joe McCarthy tried to convince America that this music was subversive and corrupting our youth so he blacklisted the music and iconic groups, such as The Weavers. However, in 1958 a group called The Kingston Trio commercialized folk music and brought it back into the mainstream and paved the way for Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs. Peter, Paul & Mary and then the British invasion. We will review this important period in our music history and highlight how The Kingston Trio recaptured our cultural heritage and filled our college campuses with a sense of community.
