My first encounter with the TBE Caring Community was as a patient recuperating from a serious operation. A gentleman called me and asked if he could visit and deliver a gift from the Caring Community. He was kind, gentle and brought chicken soup, one of few foods I could eat. When I retired a few years later, I saw in the TBE Bulletin an invitation to join the Committee and I joined.

I have made several calls and several visits to temple members with various health challenges and have greatly enjoyed all of it. I have met some wonderful people. The calls and visits are uplifting for both the members and for me.

I also participate in the Racial Justice Initiative. This grew from Rabbi Sherman’s sermon and follow-up “Conversation on Racism.” I have the opportunity to work with several extraordinarily talented and committed members on the issues of criminal justice reform and advocacy for affordable housing. The problems of mass incarceration and lack of affordable housing have disproportionately affected people of color.

My TBE volunteer activities have provided me with an opportunity to fulfill the Jewish values of visiting the sick and working for justice.
