TBE’s Community Voice

On the last Friday in November 2017 I looked up at the sky to see the sunset on the horizon. It would soon be dark and time to observe the Sabbath.
I knew my husband Irwin and I could not attend the 6:00 pm service at TBE, because we’d recently given up driving at night.

We will miss the music so familiar to us. We will miss Jodi who brings joy to our lives with her renditions of familiar and new music and our rabbis who bring us new perspectives on various aspects of Judaism.

There was no way to counteract this loss in our lives. At home we do light the candles, sip the wine and enjoy eating the challah from our favorite bakery in South Brookline.

One day, a member of our congregation told us that we could live stream the services from the temple to our modern iPad device. It’s not the same as physically being in the sanctuary but it’s amazing that with the advances in technology we can be at home and at the temple at the same time.
Whether we lived in Baltimore, New Mexico or here in Westwood, my mom and dad called us every Friday night before they went to services at Congregation B’nai Jacob in New Haven Connecticut. They never missed a Shabbat service. It was the highlight of their week and they set a beautiful example for me.

Shabbat has always been very meaningful for me. Every Friday as I conclude the blessing over the candles I pray for peace on earth and for understanding between peoples everywhere. Whether you are at home on Friday nights or in our temple Sanctuary, I wish you Shabbat Shalom.
