TBE’s Community Voice

As operations manager at TBE, I usually have a chance to engage with the TBE community in our building. In these virtual days, you can often find me connecting our community online by helping to manage our Zoom events. I love seeing all of you in the gallery at Shabbat services every Friday night!

I was delighted when I learned that the temple was taking meaningful action to make it even easier to support local businesses. Each time it’s been offered, I’ve ordered meals from temple partners like Rami’s, Fresh Food Generation, and Mamaleh’s Deli. During the pandemic, we’ve been trying to leave the house less frequently, so we’ve adopted a strategy: order takeout once; eat for three days. We love using leftovers for breakfasts and lunches (our motto: just scramble an egg into it)! However, with brisket as tasty as the one we got from Mamaleh’s in December, leftovers are unlikely.

For as long as I can remember, my family has relied on small businesses not only to provide necessary services, but to foster a feeling of camaraderie and reciprocity in the community. Growing up in a small town in upstate New York, the little corner store was the only place to go to get a sandwich, pick up some eggs, or buy goods from a local crafter or artist. This sense of responsibility to take care of each is still with me today and informs my spending decisions.

Participating in the temple’s restaurant partnerships is one way my family cares for ourselves, each other, and our community. It’s valuable to us to imagine sharing a meal with all of you, our temple community, even if we can’t be together.
